What is PTE?

What is the TOEFL Exam?

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English.

PTE Academic evaluates real-world academic English skills. It is widely recognized by universities, colleges, and governments across the globe as an unbiased measure of an individual’s English proficiency. PTE scores are accepted by thousands of educational institutions in countries like Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, Germany, and more. Additionally, PTE is approved for all types of visa applications in Australia and New Zealand.

The test focuses on everyday English rather than advanced language skills, assessing a student’s ability to understand and communicate effectively. Its multi-level grading system offers a clearer picture of a candidate’s overall proficiency.

Administered by Pearson Inc., the PTE exam lasts for 3 hours, and results are typically available within 48 hours of completing the test.

In the following sections, we will provide detailed information about the PTE exam, helping you understand its importance and make an informed decision.

The global acceptance of PTE scores makes it a preferred choice for students worldwide. Not only does the test open doors to studying abroad, but it also provides an accurate assessment of their English proficiency, helping them understand how they will perform in an international environment.

The PTE Academic exam is a 3-hour session where you’ll be provided with a computer and headset to listen, read, and respond to questions.

To understand the PTE test format, it’s important to know the three main sections of the exam:

  1. Speaking and Writing (Combined): 77-93 minutes
In this section, you’ll begin with a personal introduction and then move on to tasks such as reading aloud, describing images, repeating sentences, and retelling lectures. You’ll also complete an essay writing task, which gives you 20 minutes.
  2. Reading: 32-40 minutes
This section evaluates your reading and comprehension skills. You’ll answer multiple-choice questions and fill in blanks based on the given texts.
  3. Listening: 45-57 minutes
You’ll listen to various audio and video clips and take notes. Based on these clips, you’ll answer questions in different formats, testing your listening comprehension.

There is also an optional 10-minute break between the Reading and Listening sections. Since PTE is an integrated skill test, you will encounter up to 20 different question formats, ranging from multiple-choice to essay writing and interpreting information.

Types of PTE

While the PTE Academic is the primary English proficiency test for study and immigration purposes, there are a few different types tailored for specific needs, especially for entry into the UK.

  1. PTE Academic UKVI
This test is similar to the PTE Academic in terms of format and curriculum but is specifically designed for those applying for UK visas.
  2. PTE Academic
This is the standard PTE test, used for academic purposes and immigration to various countries.
  3. PTE Academic UKVI (Work Visa)
This version is for those applying for a work visa in the UK.
  4. PTE Home
For applicants looking to study below degree level (e.g., Foundation or Pathways courses, or professional English courses) as part of their General Student Visa (Tier 4).

If you’re aiming to study at a degree level or above in an institution that is not considered a Higher Education Institution (HEI), you would need to take the appropriate version of the PTE.

Best PTE Scores

PTE Academic is scored on the Global Scale of English (GSE), which ranges from 10 to 90. This scale provides clear indicators of what a learner can accomplish in Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing at each score level.

The GSE system was designed by educators worldwide to help students gauge their English proficiency and track their progress.

PTE scores are interpreted as follows:

  • Expert: You have a flawless command of the English language, both in academic and social settings.
  • Very Good: You have a strong grasp of the language but occasionally make some errors.
  • Good: You understand most of the language but make errors from time to time.
  • Competent: You have a solid understanding of the language in specific contexts.
  • Modest: Your ability to use English in familiar situations is sometimes hindered by gaps in knowledge and understanding.
  • Limited: You have a general understanding of the language but face frequent communication breakdowns.
  • Extremely Limited: You struggle significantly with understanding both spoken and written English.

Additionally, PTE provides a graphical representation of your scores, allowing you to analyse and identify your strengths and areas for improvement.
